Basic Fried Shrimp

Fried shrimp is definitely not something you should eat daily, but you can have it occasionally with the Mediterranean Diet. Just make sure that the rest of your meal is relatively fat free. Leafy vegetables and brown rice are the best complement.


½ pound of peeled and deveined shrimp
½ cup of whole wheat flour
¼ tsp of salt
1/8 tsp of black pepper
Pinch of garlic powder
2 cups of peanut or canola oil for frying


  1. In a medium sized bowl, season the shrimp with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  2. Lightly coat the shrimp with the whole wheat flour. Allow to sit on counter for at least 5 minutes.
  3. In the meantime, add oil to a cast iron pan. Heat on medium high heat until it reaches a temperature of 375F. If you don’t have a thermometer, you can estimate that it will take about 5 minutes. A drop of water that hits the oil should sizzle and evaporate instantly.
  4. Fry shrimp on each side for about 1 minute and thirty seconds.
